As someone who recently purchased a bunch of Great Courses on audible in a fit of back to school nostalgia, I really love this idea of making a syllabus!
Also, I was thinking of making myself a bingo style reading challenge based on 101 Books To Read Before You Get Murdered for my fall reading.
Horror is my go to genre and I have been a huge fan of Sadie Hartmann aka Mother Horror for quite some time. Following her on social media has helped expand my horror library beyond Stephen King. I love her Nightworms subscription box! I would say 101 Books To Read Before You Get Murdered is an excellent choice for a non academic overview of contemporary horror.
Paperbacks From Hell by Grady Hendrix is the book that was my first "horror school" and I would highly recommend it if you desire to continue your education!
I am curious ro hear how this journey goes for you!
Thanks! Sadie Hartmann was new to me when I got her book but now I’m definitely a fan. And I loved Paperbacks from Hell. I saw the other day that they’ve been reissuing some of the books he featured with a paperbacks from hell label. So fun! And I love the idea of a bingo card. :)
I LOVE that Valancourt has been re-releasing some of the classics in Paperbacks From Hell! It'd also fun to find the titles in thriftshops and library sales
This is brilliant! What an amazing way to add structure to learning a new topic! It also looks like it can really help streamline the process, breaking down all these different sub-genres into digestible pieces. (And your homework lists are amazing, love the movie and book lineups!) And making the space for critical reflection and analysis?? This is so cool, and so inviting, and so practical—I love it! Romantasy syllabus, here I come!
I love this idea!!! I cannot believe I never thought of it! I'm getting ready to create a plan/goals for watercolor painting and this would be perfect - thank you Roni!
I just stumbled across this post on creating a syllabus as a way to structure a goal - you have completely inspired me! So I created a 12-week holistic weight loss class for myself modeling your framework. I’m finalizing my required reading list and intake assessment today and starting my program tomorrow.
I am knee deep in syllabi at the moment but I am definitely going to use this in my next break to focus on a new interest or curiosity. I love the fresh plan at the start of a semester, as well as the redirection mid-course when I feel like I’m about to careen off the rails! It’s such a great way to track progress and stick to a plan - I especially love the grading scale to hold yourself accountable!
There were so many bad, but campy good, B-horror movies in the 60s. Lots from the UK. Plus Vincent Price. I hope you get a chance to watch them. TCM is usually a good place to find them. (I watched too much UHF as a kid,--we didn't have cable.)
I Iove a good campy horror movie! :) And I’m planning to watch both the original version and new version of House of Wax so I’ll be getting some Vincent Price. :)
This is delightful, Roni! I was *just* thinking that I want to learn a no-code tool and build out this idea for a website service that I just would never have time to code in PHP. I've been saying this for literal months. A syllabus could really help. I manage to get my authoring projects done in an organized manner, but extra stuff that (for me) is fun, just sits at the bottom of the list. Thanks!
Yay, glad it gave you some inspiration! And yes, I think it could be perfect for those projects we put on the back burner as “one day I’ll get to that” things.
I love this idea so much. I'm going to think on this and incorporate it into my new year planning session with my membership group for next year. Fun! Thanks!
I’m Input and #2 learner on Gallup and this just made me tingly with happiness. I keep saying I want to dive more deeply into Lucy Maude Montgomery’s work and I think I could use the syllabus approach to motivate me to make a one year project, add on screen adaptations, sort by when she wrote the book ( cross referencing with her published diaries to see if life was influencing art. Yes!! Nerding out! Thanks so much.
I love this idea! I think I’d have to say Romance Writing 101 would be my class/syllabus! And also, who doesn’t love a good syllabus!! It’s like a roadmap for your schedule.

And if you follow @motherhorror on Twitter or Instagram, I can guarantee a large TBR pile. LOL

You’re welcome! Have fun! 😊

So glad it sparked some ideas for you! Have fun!
Being someone who absolutely obsesses over the idea of Back to School shopping, I'm pretty sure I've reached the pinnacle of nerdiness!
School supply shopping is the BEST!

Glad the idea spoke to you! Let us know what you “syllabus” about if you decide to make one. :)
OMG!! This just confirms the whole point of the movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy"! LOL
Have u seen it?
Though very good points are made!
No, I’ve never heard of it.
This is so cool!

ooooh, I love this idea, too!
This is very nerdy, and probably not something I would do, but I appreciate its appeal.
As a side note, I am not a horror person, but Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Shaun of the Dead are great movies. :-)
Ooh, good to know about the movies! Thanks! :)
I love this idea!
There aren't words to describe how much I love this. **plans own syllabus** Thank you Roni!!
Lol. I know exactly how you feel. When I first read the idea, it was like nerdy angels singing in the background. 🤣

Ooh, that’s such a good idea to deep dive into one person’s work! And I’m #1 learner #2 input so *high five* to nerding out. :)

Right?? A roadmap can really help. :)
