When my youngest went to kindergarten, I started writing. I wrote a 170k book over four months. It's safely tucked away in a file on my computer. It's a tad too long. I didn't set out to write a story that long, it just poured out of me.
It's been a long time since I watched Casablanca. I still have the VHS. lol. That long ago, but I loved it. I grew up watching those B&W classics on UHF TV.
Several of my lifetime deep dives have been music related. Boy, do i remember those days of trying to crib lyrics. I play guitar and sing (folk style stuff mostly) so that was how I generated a lot of repertoire. I’m old enough that a lot of my lyric harvesting was done from vinyl. What a job!
I’ve also taught myself the basics of several other musical instruments over the years. If I had a chance to borrow something, I’d give it a try. So I’ve played some trumpet, oboe, flute, recorder and piano over the years. Mainly for my own enjoyment, though I did play trumpet in college marching band (percussion was boring). And at one point I bought a kit and built a hammer dulcimer so I could learn to play that.
Oof, lyric cribbing via vinyl would be so much harder! And that's awesome that you've picked up so many instruments. My teen is like that. He's a School of Rock kid and they've always encouraged trying different instruments or singing and just going for it. So now he plays guitar primarily but also can play bass and drums well. (And I won't tell him that you said percussion is boring since that's what he plays in the school band, lol.)
I over-generalized a bit. All percussion is not boring, but I spent a year of marching band mainly playing cymbals. I’m actually a violist, and it was a way into marching band (similar thing happened to me in high school, when band was the only school music group that fit my schedule senior year). I learned enough snare drum in pep band season to keep myself amused, then when I got home that summer picked up the trumpet my brother wasn’t using.
And now I often get to play the random percussion bit that crops up in church choir (tambourine, cabasa, hand drum, etc.). So the experience was certainly handy!
Yes! I adore deep dive projects! Yours are great to read about!
One of my current deep dives is Art History, for lack of a better word. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed but noticed I often left it shallow, so I recently made it a Thing and my project was born. I choose an artist to learn to recognize some of their works, to read all kinds of background around those works, anecdotes and bits about their lives—not just straight bio. My current obsession is Monet.
I’m also doing an Essays/Memoirs Project that has been delightful!
I love this! Art is one of those things that I have on my list for a future deep dive because I know very little beyond "ooh I like that" when it comes to art. *nerdy high five*
I LOVE mishearing lyrics. lol Sometimes, my brain just hears what it wants to hear and I come up with the best lines/titles. Pearl Jam is great for this. 🤣

I started writing when my kiddo was toddling around because my brain needed non-mom stuff to do. That book is tucked away too! Lol.
