I am so sorry about your loss. I usually read a lot of horror novels, but sometimes need a break from darkness. I typically turn to erotic romance (which is how i discovered your books) or a favorite children's novel (like Little Women or Anne of Green Gables) when I need a something lighter.
Thank you. And I find I do the same, kind of bouncing back and forth between lighter books and dark books. Like I read the dark books I talked about in this post and then binged The Summer I Turned Pretty YA series, which was full of light fun.
So sorry for your loss. Hoping you and your husband have lots of support right now.
Mood reads? Absolutely. Erotic romance with strong characters (including Melt Into You and Not Until You, as well as so many others) got me through both a job loss and my husband's cancer treatments back in 2013/2014. I need to remind myself that there are happy endings during dark times.
I listened to The Only Plane in the Sky last year and sobbed, literally sobbed, during my commute regularly. I'm sure the other folks on the train thought I was unhinged. It was and is a beautiful book. And the new Top Gun was fun for all the reasons you mentioned - so much nostalgia!
Thanks, Kristine. And I'm so glad to hear some of my books helped you during a tough time. <3 And yes, I finished The Only Plane in the Sky today and it was such a sad read but so well done. I'm glad I read it.
If I'm in a mood, my go-to to feel better is historical romance.
I switched it up and read a witch book. It was really good. I have a couple of non-fiction books on the back burner, but I love contemporary romance all the time.
If you were in a parallel universe, I was there, too.
Loved Top Gun! Also saw Downton Abbey and Jurassic World.
I don't think I'm a mood reader, at least I am not aware of choosing books to fit my mood. However, in turbulent/unhappy/sad times I go back old favorites and re-read them. I read a lot of romance precisely because I need to know there will be a happy ending at the end of the book.
Thank you. And I hear you on the happy endings. I read a book by Taylor Jenkins Reid a long time ago, One True Loves, and when the character loses her husband, someone in her life (can't remember if it's her mom or friend) would read books before giving them to her to make sure they had happy endings. I always thought that was such a touching thought.
I am a mood reader. Often I find comfort in re-reading old favorites. Some I have read so often that I don't always bother to continue reading when my mood changes. This is especially true of multi-volume works, like the Cazelette Chronicles. My pleasure in re-reading means that giving away or donating books I have is dangerous. On more than one occasion, I have had to re-purchase a discarded favorite.
Oof, yes, it's always so hard to decide which books to keep. I'm not a re-reader but I do like to have access to my favorites on my shelf to skim through and find quotes and such.
I am sorry for your loss. I know it will take a while to work through the shock that comes with a sudden loss as well as the grief. As for reading, I am also a mood reader, and at times of sadness or stress will often re-read comfort favorites. I'll keep you all in my thoughts!
Thanks, Maggie. And I can totally see how re-reading favorites would a comfort. I'm not a re-reader but I'm a re-watcher of favorite movies and TV series and I always find that comforting.

I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

Thank you. And so glad I wasn't alone in the parallel universe! :)
Condolences to your family. Sudden loss is hard but so is any loss. Good memories can help to ease the pain.
I don't think I'm a mood reader. I read a lot of ARCs so I often can't really choose a book for mood alone even if I wanted to.
Top Gun Mavrick! I loved it so much. Hubby and I saw it twice during release week, both times in IMAX and it was fabulous!
Thank you. And ooh, I didn't get to see it in IMAX. I bet that was fantastic! :)
Im sorry your loss. I am the same way with reading and I am a mood reader. I like reading psychological thrillers or sad poetry. So i get it
Thank you. And glad I'm not the only weirdo reading sad stuff when I'm sad. ;)
I am very sorry for your loss.
